Walk Kansas is an 8-week walking program encouraging family members, schoolmates, co-workers, friends, and neighbors to come together as a team of 6 people who will track minutes of physical activity and food choices during the 8-week period.  Each team will identify a goal or challenge it wants to reach based on their level of physical activity.  There are three choices for 2019:

challenge

Challenge 1:  The 8 Wonders of Kansas (435 miles) requires each member to reach the minimum guidelines for physical activity, 2 1/2 hours per week.

Challenge 2:  Cross Country (764 miles) or 4 hours per week for each participant.

Challenge 3:  The Little Balkans to Nicodemus (1200 miles) requiring each person to get 6 hours per week.

This is an exceptional opportunity to promote health and fitness to the entire family, from small children to grandparents, or with your coworkers or friends!

Walking isn't the only activity that counts - biking, swimming, running, weight-lifting, yoga, cross-training, or any activity you do for 10 consecutive minutes or more at a moderate or vigorous intensity, can count.  Strengthening exercises also count and these activities are part of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

Healthy eating, including beverage choices, also plays a key role in reducing your risk of chronic disease.  During Walk Kansas, you will also keep track of fruits and vegetables you eat.  How much is enough?  For most adults, the recommendation is approximately 1 1/2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables daily.  The amount varies depending on your age, sex and level of physical activity.

Register your team here by March 25th, preferably by March 15th.

If you would rather register on paper, stop by your Extension office for a team packet.

Registration is $8 per participant.  There is no fee for youth in school, adults in an assisted living or nursing home, or 4-H members and 1 adult per team.  Please call your local office for the code for no fee.

Tee shirts and baseball shirts are available for purchase.  Adult tee shirts are $9.25, youth tees are $8.25, and baseball shirts are $14.50.  You can order them online when you register, or order at your local office.  Each office has sample shirts if you would like to see the colors and fabric.
