In the 2019 program, there were 327 participants in Southwind District. Together, they walked 42,913 miles. That's like walking across Kansas over 100 times!
So, what's it all about? Walk Kansas is an 8-week healthy living program encouraging family members, schoolmates, co-workers, friends, and neighbors to come together as a team of 6 people who track minutes of physical activity, servings of fruits and vegetables, and water consumption.
This is an exceptional opportunity to promote health and fitness to the entire family, from small children to grandparents, or with your coworkers or friends!
Walking isn't the only activity that counts - biking, swimming, running, weight-lifting, yoga, cross-training, or any activity you do for 10 consecutive minutes or more at a moderate or vigorous intensity, can count. Strengthening exercises also count and these activities are part of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
Healthy eating, including beverage choices, also plays a key role in reducing your risk of chronic disease. During Walk Kansas, you will also keep track of fruits and vegetables you eat. How much is enough? For most adults, the recommendation is approximately 1 1/2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables daily. The amount varies depending on your age, sex and level of physical activity.
